GED® FAQs

Why do I have to take the Pre-test?

We—and most New Hampshire GED test centers—require the pre-test as a prerequisite for the Official GED.  Since the passing percentage in New Hampshire is 81.7%, exceeding the US average of 68.7%, it is felt that this requirement enhances preparation and success for New Hampshire’s GED test-takers.

What happens if I fail the pre-test?

You will be contacted by the Adult Learner Services Coordinator about registering for free GED preparation classes.  Registration includes a free intake interview and assessment of the skills needed for success on the GED.  If you wish to attend evening Pre-GED Prep classes, you will first meet with our Adult Education Counselor; if you need tutorial assistance, you will meet with the Adult Learner Services Coordinator.  Based on this intake process, you will be invited to attend free classes or tutorials that are most convenient and appropriate for you.  If you feel unprepared for the GED, you may also request a free intake and assessment before you register for the pre-test by calling the Adult Learner Services Coordinator at (603) 357-9041.

Can I take the Official test if I’m under 18 years old?

No one under Age 16 may register for or be admitted to any GED testing.  You are eligible to take the Practice GED (pre-test) if you are Aged 18.  You may register for the Official GED at Age 18 after passing the Practice GED.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 17, you may pre-register for the Practice GED only with specific permission from your school Guidance Counselor and parent or guardian.  If you are between 16 and 18, you must first pass the Practice GED AND receive permission from your school district Superintendent.  Complete instructions for applying for that permission are available from your Guidance Counselor or through Katie Delaney, GED Chief Examiner (603-357-9041)..

What if I pass all of the Official GED tests but one category?

You will keep any sub-test scores above the minimum of 410 or an average of 450 until such time as a new publication of the Official GED test battery is announced, or upon passing the entire GED test battery, whichever comes first.  Anyone with partial or non-passing scores will be notified in advance of a new test publication, affording enough time to attempt to pass and finish.

Even though individual sub-test scores may be above 410, an average of 450 for all five sub-tests AND a total point achievement of at least 2250 are required in order to pass the GED.  The fee for re-testing is $15 for each sub-test within one year of the original test.  After one year, it will be necessary to re-register for those specific re-tests at the regular registration fee of $65, even though re-testing for fewer than five sub-tests may be necessary to pass the GED.

If you would like help preparing to retake the failed test, evening classes and/or tutorials are available and free of charge.

Why do I need to have a NH photo ID in order to register for the Official GED test?

The GED Testing Service® requires that all GED test candidates prove that they are at least Age 16, that each candidate demonstrates that he or she is the one and only person under the specific name for whom the test is being administered, and that the signature on the photo ID is the same as that displayed on the registration application and on the GED demographics form.  The State of New Hampshire requires that candidates prove that they physically reside in or have legal residence within the state at the time of testing.  The NH photo ID provides evidence of these requirements and is required for registration and for admission to each day of GED testing.

The ONLY photo ID that is acceptable is a government-issued identification such as a NH drivers license or non-driver photo ID, both of which can be obtained at most NH Motor Vehicle offices.  A non-driver photo ID can be obtained at a cost of $10.  A US passport may also be accepted with supporting evidence such as a bill or post-marked piece of mail that demonstrates residence in the State of New Hampshire.

What if I don’t have one?  Can I use a student ID card?

Student ID cards are not acceptable forms of identification for the GED.  If a candidate does not have a NH drivers license, a non-driver photo ID can be obtained from the NH Motor Vehicle Department.  A US passport may be used as photo ID, but may not provide evidence of residence; in this case, a document or recent mailing envelope may be acceptable in addition to the passport.

What happens if I miss one session of the Official GED test?

If a candidate attends one day of a two-day test session but is unable to attend the second day, it is possible to arrange, directly with the GED Chief Examiner, for test completion at a subsequent monthly session, but such completion must be accomplished within the same testing year (September through June).  It is important to note, however, that a "Demographics" document must be completed before any score sheets are submitted to a scoring center; the demographics form is usually completed at the second testing session.

Can I get a refund if I don’t make it to a test?

Your test fee is non-refundable.  If you are unable to attend your reserved test session, you may, with at least 24-hour prior notice, be able to reschedule for a subsequent monthly session.  If a registered candidate does not call at least 24 hours in advance or does not show up as scheduled, or if the test is not rescheduled within the same testing year, the test fee will be forfeited.

Where and when can I register for either test if I can’t make it 171 West St. during the day?

You may call the GED Chief Examiner to schedule an appointment at another time or place, or you may register at the Community Education night office at Keene High School during scheduled night hours.  It is necessary to bring the exact test fee amount ($25 for pre-test, $65 for Official GED) because cash is not held and change is not made at our night office.
